HOW DO YOU FIND THE WORK YOU’RE DOING?
I am working with an organization for disadvantaged children (street children) and I love my work so much because it’s not a mere work, but it’s a wish right from the childhood, since I almost grew up with such children. I have gotten benefits from it like getting friendship with these amazing children, working experience, fulfillment of my dream, and I have learned to be devoted to my commitment. However the same work has got some challenges like working almost 24 hours a day, counseling some of the children with extremely negative issues turnin them back to normal, and other minors.

WHEN DID YOU GET INVOLVED?
I started on 2011/26th/03 when I met one of the board members (director: Mpalanyi Peter) who told me about the work they were doing in the organization they had started. So after the conversation we had, I asked him to inform the board that there is someone who needs to join in if possible and fortunately I was accepted.

WHY YOU CHOOSE TO WORK FOR THE ORGANIZATION?
Just as I mentioned earlier, working with the organization for children is a dream I got since I was still a child and this happened because I also grew up in the slums although for me I was not a street kid, but street children were one of  the fellow children I played with or grew up with. So that nearness or closeness to them exposed me so much to what they were going through and I started nurturing a dream at least to do something that can change their lives in the future. So, what was a dream in future, it’s today. And to cut story short, I choose working with the organization because it was my dream to pursue right from the childhood.

WHAT I LIKE MOST: Chatting with kids
WHAT I DISLIKE: I hate a person who mistreats a kid

HOW DO YOU FIND THE WORK YOU’RE DOING?
The work was so challenging at first because I was just gaining experience in that field.  It is not easy to convince a kid to go away from the streets.  And sometimes those who accepted them brought in a home have challenges in maintaining them. Since I liked charity work, mostly helping the kids, I decided to continue with the work I was doing. Besides that, I have seen the positive changes like kids going back to school, gaining their rights, and getting social behaviours. To me, I have gained skills and I am happy because of the work I am doing.

WHEN DID YOU GET INVOLVED?
I got involved in the organization from the very start.

WHY YOU CHOOSE TO WORK FOR THE ORGANIZATION?
I choose this work because of my background and situation I passed through when I was still young.  I lost my dad when I was two months old and my maternal grandmother took care of me because my father’s family said “I was not born in their family”.  My grand died when I was 13 years of age and that was the day I felt like it was a mess to be born because nobody was there to care for me.  I stayed in the house alone. Two months after that had happened I came up with a suggestion of joining the city because I knew that there is a lot of money in the city. To cut the story short, the situation was very bad. I did not have where I can sleep and all I got was a simple job in Owino market.  After some time, I collected some money and I went back to school. It was not easy, but I completed senior four and joined an institution. I am doing electrical installation now. I have not talked about my mother because have seen her just last year. So I knew that many kids have the same problems even more than me. That is why I decided to give them the little I have so that they can be good and responsible people in the future.

HOW DO YOU FIND THE WORK YOU’RE DOING?
The work is quiet interesting for a person like me who is to take the course that is social science. I have gained a lot of experience in handling vulnerable children and this has made my life more valuable to the community.  However it is challenging working in a community of people who use drugs and it needs a lot of concentration.

WHEN DID YOU GET INVOLVED?
I got involved in 2011 when the project had just started.

WHY YOU CHOOSE TO WORK FOR THE ORGANIZATION?
I choose to work for this organization because of this reason, I have lived street life.   Even though I did not spend much of the time at the streets but in the slums is where I  grew up from. It is one of the biggest slums in Kampala.  I had many friends who where vulnerable and in a way of looking for how to survive.  They were killed and some just died because no one cared for them.  Therefore every time I thought of the many friends that I had at the young age and they are nowhere to be found, I always looked for a way of helping any vulnerable child.  Therefore when this organization was initiated, I took it to be an advantage hence choosing to work with it.

WHAT I DISLIKE: I dislike people who promise and do not fulfill their promises

HOW DO YOU FIND THE WORK YOU’RE DOING?
Indeed the work I am doing has done a great positive impact to the community.  I realize a great future for the ex-vulnerable children is now at a better level that will lead them to valuable people because of the services that we provide to them.  Due to the collective input of the members, I have realized changes among the children.  I have come up to enjoy working with the organization due to the hope and future it is looking forward to obtain.

WHEN DID YOU GET INVOLVED?
I got involved in this organization from the first day of its initiation.

WHY YOU CHOOSE TO WORK FOR THE ORGANIZATION?
The reason to why I have chosen to work for this organization is due to the fact that I was working with a certain organization as a volunteer (caretaker) but the administration system of the organization led to the mistreatment of the children that it cared for.  This made me discontented because what was on paper was different from what was practical at the organization.  When I explained the conditions at the organization to Ante who was one of the sponsors of the organization, he realized we had to open up another organization that will be run in accordance to the constitution.  This led to the initiation of this organization.

Therefore it is the commitment that I have to help vulnerable children that makes me work for this organization, so that every child can achieve what the rest of the children in the community receive.  In addition to the above reason, I have lived in the slum. The only good thing that makes me better than the vulnerable children that I have grown up seeing is we had a house where we slept. We also went to school and were cared for by our parents.  I have grown up seeing how street children who lived in the slums suffered as they had nowhere to sleep, nothing to eat other than in the garbage bins, they did not go to any school hence the misery they live in ached me. Such reasons made me always pray for a day when I would find a way of helping the vulnerable children and this explains the reason to why I chose to work with this organization.

HOW DO YOU FIND THE WORK YOU’RE DOING?

I like the work I do because I have much interest in it and the love for others.  They are also humans just like others who stay with their parents as well.

WHEN DID YOU GET INVOLVED?

I got involved when the project had just started in 2011 and we set up an organization of taking care of street kids.

WHY YOU CHOOSE TO WORK FOR THE ORGANIZATION?

I choose to join the organization because I had the parental care for children.  So far I like to see if I can do better in taking care of street children.  The work isn’t easy because it’s not just taking care of a new born baby.  I had to continue taking care of them as they came up and bring them to fit in the society like other children.
